Tuesday's with Morrie - Discussion 2

"...the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We're teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it" (p. 35)

"The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in" p. 52

Discuss the above quotes, as well as the "list," Tuesday people, and "love wins." Choose at least 3 and describe how each of these came about (what do they mean) and react to each of them.

"...the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We're teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it" (p. 35). This is what Mitch and Morrie talk about on Tuesday. Morrie tells Mitch to be a man who is “fully human”. Not to be a person who wants to become rich and not find who they really are. You should be working on your values and finding a way to enjoy your life. Also, you shouldn’t do what everyone else is doing, be happy and do what u think must be done. Mitch realizes he has been chasing money, instead of love and community, which is the purpose to life.
"The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in" (p. 52). Morrie tells Mitch this because he notices Mitch does not really know how to do this, and he holds it back. Morrie loves to show love to people and he lets it come out and that is why he has a lot of people visiting him and always stopping by his home. Morrie tells Mitch that if he has love there is no other experience of such fulfillment. Morrie says if you don’t have love, you are living for nothing.
The list is what Mitch wrote down for Morrie to tell him about and to explain to him how he can achieve each item to make his life better. The list contains death, fear, aging, greed, marriage, family, society, forgiveness, and a meaningful life. Each Tuesday they cover one of these topics

Do you agree with Morrie's statements? How do you define happiness and would you be able to live a happy life if you were not following in the path society has made for you?
